Travelers booking China Airlines flights from Philippines will find it difficult to get cheap tickets as Taiwan’s national flag carrier has sought Philippines’ Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) approval to increase the fuel surcharge on flight tickets.

Media reports quoting a notice posted on CAB website said that China Airlines has filed a petition with the CAB for approval to impose upward fuel adjustment on international passenger tickets.

According to CAB, China Airlines want to increase the fuel surcharge from the existing $30 to $32 for all passenger tickets originating from the Philippines.

This will allow China Airlines to recover the cost of jet fuel after increasing fuel surcharge, which is an important component of airline ticket prices.

China Airlines in a statement said that a major part of the revenue is spent on fuel, and this in fact forms the bulk of any airline’s operating costs. The airline said the jet fuel price increased 1.5 percent as of May 31, 2013 as compared to the last month. The airline is finding it hard to cope up with its expenses in operating the flights to/from Philippines because of high fuel costs.
