Jan 24, 2012
Air China has received $8.04 million grant by the Chinese government for its sustainable development. The capital injection will be utilized by the airlines to improve fuel efficiencies of aircraft engines as well as to install winglets on its fleet.
This is for the first time ever that environment protection effort by a domestic carrier has been acknowledged by the Chinese government and funds are made available for this.
Currently, various Chinese carriers are seriously trying to curb carbon emissions 22 percent by 2020 compared to 2005 levels. The efforts are being made due to volatile fuel prices as well as the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme implemented on January 1, 2012.
Air China wants to become a more environment friendly carrier and has decided to take the lead amongst other Chinese airlines. Earlier, Air China also became the first Chinese carrier to conduct a biofuel demonstration flight in October 2011.
