United Airlines, American Airlines file lawsuit against Chicago

by 27. January 2011 06:50
United Airlines and American Airlines finally decided to file a lawsuit against Chicago city officials over the ongoing dispute over the continued expansion of O’Hare International Airport.

The dispute arose as the airlines now have to pay the higher landing fees and rents that will cost around USD 2 billion of the total second bill cost of project, which is estimated to be USD 3.4 billion. Though the airlines have requested to Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino to postpone construction, yet no action has so far been taken in this regard.

The first phase of the project is nearing completion and the Mayor is eager to push the project into the second phase and avoid further delays.

However, the Mayor said that if the project will be delayed then it may lead to higher cost of the project and which might also result in the abandoning of the project. "We would prefer to have a dialogue with the airlines and negotiate rather than go through a court process,” said Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino.

Virgin America to expand fleet by 60 new A320 planes

by 26. January 2011 06:49
Virgin America has recently placed an order of 60 new single-aisle A320 airplanes to Airbus. The total order will cover 30 A320 neo, a new version of Airbus’s best selling airplane that will be equipped with more fuel-efficient engine.

It is said that the new aircrafts will reduce up to 15 percent of consumption, which further helps in reducing the carbon emission.

Virgin America president and chief executive David Cush said, “If the industry does not clean itself up and is unwilling to invest in these technologies, we will become a pariah, and people will deem travel is evil.”

The present fleet of the carrier that began its operations in 2007, possesses a total of 34 airplanes which are running on different routes and 17 are expected to join the fleet by the end of 2011. The airlines is expected to increase its fleet to 110 from 80 by 2016.

Ryanair expands its connectivity on Manchester route

by 25. January 2011 06:45
Ryanair recently announced the expansion of its Manchester route connectivity with new places such as Alicante, Faro, Madrid and Tenerife. The airline will also increase the frequency to twice from the existing Dublin route from the airport.

Previously, till August 2009 the airline served on the routes that included Girona, Cagliare, Frankfurt Hahn, Bremen, Brussels Charelroi, Dusseldorf Weeze, Marseille, Milan, Bergomo and Shannon, which had connectivity with Manchester. Later the services were pulled back from the above routes and only Dublin route remained operational.

The airline operates four daily services on Dublin route and will be increasing it to six times a week. The new routes will begin from 14th April 2011 and the bookings of the flights will start from 27th January 2011. Out of the new four routes Easyjet and Jet2 are currently operational on the Manchester-Alicante route, Monarch and Jet2 are operational over Manchester-Faro route, and Easyjet, Monarch and Jet2 are all operational over the Tenerife route.

Madrid is the brand new route and will serve the Manchester based business travelers who look ahead to reach Spain’s capital.

The airline is also planning to provide ‘twice a week’ new service from 12th April 2011 to Alicante from the Humberside airport.

“We’re delighted to see Ryanair expanding its services from MAG’s airports which is a sign of the strength in our relationship. At Manchester, Ryanair has seen an opportunity to grow in the off peak period which enables us to make the best use of our infrastructure assets at a traditionally quiet time of day. Equally, Ryanair’s new twice-weekly service to Alicante from Humberside Airport and its decision to add a weekly Palma service from Bournemouth are important, positive developments for MAG,” said Penny Coates, chief operating officer of the Manchester Airports Group.
