Alaska Airlines to raise baggage fee from Oct this year

Following the footsteps of its peers, Alaska Airlines announced its decision to lift prices for checking baggage. Passengers booking Alaska Airline tickets on or after Oct 30, 2013 will have to pay $25 extra for first and second checked baggage. For any other additional baggage the cost to be paid is $75.

At present the airline charges $20 per baggage for first three bags. However, the Seattle based airline will stick to its unique baggage service. As per this service the customers can find their baggage at the baggage claim area within 20 minutes of the plane parking, failing which the airline will pay compensation. Currently the airline offers a $20 discount code to be used on next flight or 2,000 bonus frequent fliers miles. Subsequently this discount will rise to $25 and the miles to 2,500.

The airline is also raising the fee to change tickets to $125. Presently it charges $75 for an online change and $100 for a change made through call centers.

Scandinavian Airlines to offer cheap airfares to frequent flyers

Travelers flying more often with Scandinavian Airlines are in for good times as the airline has decided to offer them cheap airfares on most of its flights.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has now launched a stiff competition aimed at giving tough times to its low-cost rival Norwegian Air. The airline has indicated that it is ready to concentrate more on its frequent flyers and planning to upgrade its “EuroBonus” program.

The airline said that the “EuroBonus” program is exclusively designed for frequent flyers, and the upgraded program will be offering new levels of service and benefits for its loyal passengers.

Eivind Roald, Director of Sales and Marketing for SAS, said that the airline will now be focusing extra on those who travel a lot. The airline, though, will have an offer for everyone. He also said that the bonus program hasn’t been exploited well enough in retaining and attracting the customers.

The airline will upgrade its current frequent flyer program “EuroBonus Gold” with a new “Diamond, Platinum of Elite” card.

EVA Air introduces new business class cabins from London Heathrow

Taiwan’s leading carrier EVA Air recently introduced new generation business class cabin on flights from London Heathrow Airport to Taipei. The airline’s upgraded cabin Royal Laurel Class has been installed on all its Boeing 777-300ER aircrafts.

The airline in a statement said that the passengers buying business class tickets will now be able to enjoy heightened luxury when flying in the new cabin.

EVA Air had first introduced Royal Laurel Class between Taipei and New York in June 2012. This has now made advent on UK flights effective from July 5, 2013, and would be available on all London flights by the end of July. The airline operates daily flights from London Heathrow to Taipei via Bangkok. Earlier in June this year, EVA Air joined Star Alliance.

The airline offers 38 seats in its Royal Laurel Class. The seats are 26 inches wide and recline 180 degrees stretching out almost two meters. The cabin is also equipped with the latest in-flight entertainment system and high-fidelity noise-cancelling headphones.

Qatar Airways deploying Boeing 787 on three Scandinavian routes

Qatar Airways recently announced it will be deploying a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft on three Scandinavian routes from August this year. This would provide opportunity to customers to buy plane tickets at competitive rates along with multiple flight options.

The airline in a statement said that it will be launching Dreamliner flights to Stockholm from August 1, 2013. The airline will also launch Boeing 787 flights to Copenhagen and Oslo from September 1. The flights would be operated from Doha International Airport.

Currently, Qatar Airways is operating daily flights to Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen, totaling 21 services every week to the three destinations. The airline has been offering services on Scandinavian routes since 2007.

Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, said that the airline’s Scandinavian network has grown in stature and importance. He expressed his delight over the airline’s decision to introduce Dreamliner flights to Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo. Baker said that the passengers would be provided an unparalleled level of service and comfort to/from Scandinavia.

AirTran Airways to end Grand Rapids service on August 10

AirTran Airways flights to Grand Rapids will end on August 10, 2013. Southwest Airlines, which wholly owns AirTran Airways, has said that Grand Rapids will now be converted to Southwest service.

Currently, the process of AirTran Airways integration with Southwest Airlines is underway ever since the merger was announced. The flights being presently operated by AirTran Airways will cease to exist after the integration of flights are fully achieved.

Southwest Airlines has said that it will begin operating flights from Grand Rapids to Saint Louis, Orlando, Denver and Baltimore/Washington from August 11, 2013, a day after AirTran Airways ends its service to Grand Rapids.

Southwest Airlines has also announced it will start nonstop flights between Flint, Michigan and Las Vegas from August 11 this year. The inaugural service from Flint will also include nonstop service to Tampa Bay, Orlando and Baltimore/Washington. AirTran Airways is currently serving Bishop International Airport in Flint.

Swiss Airlines to offer discounts to luggage-less passengers

Passengers traveling without baggage can now look forward to cheap tickets when traveling on Swiss Airlines. The airline recently announced it is soon going to provide discounted fares to those passengers who fly with only take-on-board baggage.

By announcing cheap airfares to customers who do not have checked baggage, Swiss Airlines is following in the footsteps of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and British Airways. The new offer will be applicable to those flying to/from Geneva. The customers will be able to take advantage of this new benefit effective from September 1, 2013.

Swiss Airlines will also introduce its new two-tier tariff structure for its services to/from Geneva in September this year. The airline will be offering two types of fare structure for travel in Economy Class. The new fares would be categorized as Geneva Economy Flex and Geneva Economy Light.

The passengers would be allowed to carry one piece of checked baggage along with rebooking and cancellation under Geneva Economy Flex fare. However, when booking Geneva Economy Light fare the passengers would be allowed to carry only a hand luggage. They won’t be offered rebooking or cancellation benefit.

Now 5,000 extra miles bonus in business class on SriLankan

SriLankan Airlines recently launched its newest app designed for its frequent flyer program “FlySmiLes” members. The airline in a statement said that the app would provide an array of benefits for its FlySmiLes members. The benefit includes convenient travel planning as well.

According to SriLankan Airlines, non-FlySmiLes members will be able to enroll themselves easily through this mobile application. This would allow them accrual of miles from their very first flight itself.

Providing details about the benefits, the airline said that FlySmiLes members booking business class tickets would also be entitled to bonus miles on their first flight with 5,000 extra miles bonus. Those members who would be traveling on Economy Class tickets would be entitled to 3,000 extra miles bonus on their first flight.

The users of FlySmiLes frequent flyer program would also be the first one to be informed of special offers, including upgrades, limited offer promotions and discounted airfares, by SriLankan Airlines and FlySmiLes Partners.

Xiamen Airlines sign codeshare pact with Garuda Indonesia

Chinese carrier Xiamen Airlines recently signed a codeshare partnership agreement with Indonesia’s national carrier Garuda Indonesia. The codeshare pact will enable Xiamen Airlines extend its two regular round-trip services to Jakarta.

Currently, Xiamen Airlines is operating daily flights on the Hangzhou-Fuzhou-Singapore and Zhengzhou-Xiamen-Singapore routes. Xiamen Airlines in a statement said that it has started selling codeshare flight tickets under the new pact starting from July 4, 2013.
 
The airline would be implementing its free code sale cooperation with Garuda Indonesia on its three round-trip services connecting Jakarta and Singapore starting from August 4, 2013. The codeshare flight numbers are MF803/4, MF805/6 and MF807/8.

Xiamen Airlines said that the passengers from Fuzhou, Hangzhou, Xiamen and Zhengzhou would be able to choose the specific codeshare flights to connect to Jakarta via Singapore according to their travel demands. The airline said that the luggage of the passengers would be sent directly to their final destinations.

Allegiant Air to begin nonstop jet service to Los Angeles

Las Vegas-based low-cost carrier Allegiant Air recently announced it will be launching its nonstop jet service to Los Angeles International Airport in September this year.

The airline in a statement said that the twice weekly Allegiant Air flights between Las Vegas and Los Angeles would begin from September 26, 2013. The airline is offering introductory fares starting $54.99 one-way.

Jessica Wheeler, Spokeswoman of Allegiant Air, said that the airline will be operating flights on Los Angeles-Las Vegas route on Thursdays and Sundays each week. However, the airline might change the schedule in the future.

Allegiant Air will be using Airbus A319, A320 or McDonnell Douglas MD-80 aircraft to operate flights on the route.

Last year, the airline started offering nonstop flights between Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and Provo. The airline further stated that it started offering service between Provo and Oakland International Airport in June 2013. Allegiant Air is also planning to add more destinations in future.

Alaska Airlines daily service to Colorado Springs, Omaha from Nov

Alaska Airlines recently announced it will be launching its flights services to Colorado Springs and Omaha from November this year. The flights to both these destinations would be operated from Seattle.

Alaska Airlines in a statement said that it will begin operating daily flights on Seattle-Colorado Springs route starting from November 1, 2013. The flights between Seattle and Omaha to be operated daily would be launched from November 7 this year.

The airline also revealed that it would also be adding nonstop flights between Portland and Tucson effective from November 1. The airline is also planning to launch flight between Portland and Reno starting from November 8.

To mark the new daily services, the customers were offered cheap tickets for travel between Seattle and Colorado Springs as well as between Portland and Tucson starting from $129* one-way. For travel between Seattle and Omaha the customers can get cheap airfares starting $169* one-way. The travel to all these destinations must be completed latest by January 31, 2014.

* The fares are one-way, and inclusive of all government taxes, airport fees and fuel surcharges. Other terms and conditions are applicable.
