Cheap Flights to Kolkata

Mar 13, 2012

Beneath the cover of crowds and pollution lies a cultured and aesthetic city. Kolkata is not what it seems at first sight; there’s more to this versatile city.
India’s second largest city, Kolkata can be a little overwhelming for first time visitors. The mass of people, their fast paced life (and vehicles), the fusion of old architecture with new and the congestion can be hard to digest as soon as you get off your flights. But give it a few days, and you will find that this is a very likeable city with helpful people and a distinct charm.

Flights to Kolkata
While Kolkata is connected by bus and by train to other parts of India as well as to Dhaka in Bangladesh, booking your flights to Kolkata is often a better option because there are plenty of cheap flights to this metro from different parts of the world. The Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Airport connects Kolkata to several international locations. Book your transfer to the city in advance or take the air-conditioned bus from the airport to the city, because unlike your cheap tickets, last minute taxis in Calcutta may prove to be quite expensive.

Hotels
Whatever your budget is, Kolkata offers plenty of choices for accommodation. Try to make your hotel booking when you book your airline tickets itself because room rates may vary according to demand. Kolkata has retained much of its colonial charm; so you will find that there are a lot of clubs here that offer spacious rooms for members.

Transport
Public transport is available in plenty and is very interesting to use in Kolkata. Starting from the humble rickshaw to the efficient metro rail, you have a lot of options in this city. Jump on a share auto to travel with the locals, view Kolkata from the slow pace of a tram, or, if you want to travel fast, just go to the metro rail station and reach your destination in minutes.

Sights and Activities
You could take a conducted tour of the sights in Kolkata in an air-conditioned bus to see all the main attractions in a day. However, if you have more time in hand, you can explore each of these attractions individually like the Kali temple, Belur Math, Kalighat, Science city, Victoria Memorial, Birla Planetarium, Indian museum, Shahid Minar and the Missionaries of Charity. You can’t miss passing through the Howrah Bridge when you travel in Kolkata. You can take a cruise on the river to view the majestic bridge better.

Kolkata is liveliest during the Durga Puja, a nine day festival, usually in the months of Oct-Nov. All streets will have a make-shift Durga temple and people will rejoice with sweets and colors in the evening. If you don’t mind getting crushed in the crowds, book your flights to Kolkata for this season, for in spite of the crowds, this is a thrilling cultural experience.Bengali food is famous throughout the world; so don’t leave Kolkata without tasting the different varieties of fish or the famous Bengali sweets.

Best time to visit
October to March is the best time to visit Kolkata since the weather is not too hot or rainy. The city may be quite crowded during Durga Pooja and Christmas time and getting cheap tickets to Kolkata may be difficult if you don’t book in advance.
