Caribbean destinations outperform others globally: An Insight!

Caribbean destinations continue to be a rage with millions of tourists from different parts of the world. Media reports recently quoted Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) officials as saying that the destinations in the region witnessed tourist arrivals in large numbers as well as spending in 2015. Hugh Riley, Secretary General of CTO, said, “The visitor arrivals and spending data in 2015 has exceeded expectations and set records. This is for the first time that the pace of growth of tourism in the Caribbean region has in fact outperformed world’s other major tourism regions. It’s completely good for us.”

The reports said that tourist arrivals among 28 member destinations of CTO increased by 7 percent y-o-y to 28.7 million in 2015. This has exceeded CTO’s projection of 4 to 5 percent growth. Tourist arrivals in the Caribbean region have also exceeded the projected 4.4 percent global growth rate of World Tourism Organization.

The United States, which is the largest source market in the Caribbean, accounted for 50 percent of all arrivals, to 14.3 million in 2015, reporting an increase of 6.3 percent. Tourists from Canada totaled 3.4 million last year, and increasing 4.5 percent. The Caribbean region reported arrivals growth for sixth consecutive year in 2015, while the world average of the region’s growth exceeded for the second consecutive year.

The Caribbean destinations visited by most tourists from United States included the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Trinidad & Tobago, Curacao and Barbados. Among other Caribbean destinations visited by tourists from different parts of the world include St. Vincent & the Grenadines, St. Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, , Montserrat, Grenada, U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Antigua & Barbuda, Anguilla, Sint Maarten and Aruba.
