Alitalia stakes may be further acquired by Air France-KLM

Alitalia flights have been running into deep losses for quite some years now. Even the sale of Alitalia flights tickets have not been able to rake in big revenues for the loss-making carrier.

Media reports recently said that Franco-Dutch carrier Air France, which is holding 25 percent stake in Italian carrier Alitalia since January 2009, is planning to take control of Alitalia in 2014 or 2015.

The reports stated that Air France-KLM has the option to boost its stake from January 2013. The airline has also indicated that it wants to carry out the transaction deal through a share swap. According to Air France-KLM, it is contemplating transaction deal through a share swap as it won’t have enough time to revive Alitalia’s flagging stock price between now and next year.

Alitalia had declared bankruptcy in 2008, but was re-launched as a private airline by Italian investors in 2009.
