Cheap Flights to Johannesburg

Mar 13, 2012

A visit to some of South Africa’s historic gold mines is just one of the many things you can do with cheap tickets to Johannesburg. One of Johannesburg’s nicknames, Egoli, means City of Gold, and South Africa still has almost half of the earth’s gold reserves. Like many nations that had to undergo colonization, a significant part of Johannesburg’s history revolves around searching for gold. Late-nineteenth century gold rushes characterized much of this period of South Africa’s development. Buy airline tickets for flights to Johannesburg and you’ll be able to witness recreated scenes and images from this pivotal time. The country’s two deepest mines are the East Rand Mine in Boksburg and the TauTona in Carletonville. Today, some of these many mines are open to the public. You’ll also see mine dumps at various points around the city if you do much exploring in Johannesburg. These won’t be around for too long, since mining companies have recently begun to use gold extraction techniques to reprocess these sites. Check out inexpensive flight tickets today and visit some of these giant relics of South African history.

After arriving in Johannesburg with a ticket airline, an interesting place to start your tour of the area’s golden heritage is Gold Reef City. This gold-themed amusement park and casino has its very own mining museum. Although there’s not too much to really learn here, you can go 200 feet deep into a former mining site and watch a 2.5 kilogram gold pour. One of the former mines that you can visit for free is Ferreira’s Mine, a 19th-century mine that was discovered when a bank was being built over top of it in the 1980s. Its remains, now open to the public, and sits right under Standard Bank. A small museum about this mine has also been opened. Visitors can see the Komdraai Gold Mine right after getting off cheap flights to Johannesburg. Komdraii is just a 40-minute drive from the airport and 20 minutes from the city center. It is one of the oldest mines in the area and will also take you to a beautiful rural site for an informative and easy one-hour walking tour that is doable for almost anyone. It was at Komdraai where gold was discovered in 1881, and this former mine is now a World Heritage Site. It was the second gold mine in the Witwatersraand area. Komdraai opened for production in 1887 and was only an active mine until 1914.

Book your inexpensive flight tickets to the Gold City today. Whether you plan to see just one mine or all the historic mining areas in South Africa, by finding the best airfares for flights to Johannesburg you’ll be able to witness an important part of this nation’s recent history.
