Cheap Flights to Key West

Mar 05, 2012

Although direct cheap flights to Key West are hard to come by, there are various options for travelers to use in order to purchase cheap tickets to the idyllic island. Direct airline tickets always involve at least one layover before landing at the airport in Key West since a small puddle-jumper plane is usually used. In order to reserve cheap tickets to Key West, book your flights into either Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport or Miami International Airport and then rent a car to drive through the Florida Keys, also known as the Conch Republic. You will save money and will be able to enjoy a scenic drive through turquoise waters and a tropical paradise.

Key West, also referred to as ‘Home of the Sunset’, is known for its laid-back, anything-goes atmosphere. There are people from all walks of life that live here and make it a colorful place. It is the southernmost point in the continental United States and is located only 90 miles from Cuba. Because of this prime location, Key West enjoys warm and mild weather year-round. Unfortunately, this means that flights to Key West are popular and can sometimes be on the expensive side.

To avoid over-paying and to find cheap tickets, book your vacation in the early fall months. Although this can be rainy season, it will be the best bang for your buck. Since the weather tends to warm up in the early spring, it is possible to find affordable flights to Key West during the winter months. It will be a bit cooler but there will be less tourists and better deals on accommodation.

Once your cheap flights are booked, you can look forward to the variety of attractions and beaches that the Home of the Sunset has to offer. Since the island is only 5.9 square miles, it is fairly easy to get around and see all the major sites in a few days. Take a Conch Train Tour to get an overview of the island and to see some amazing views. Visit Ernest Hemingway’s house to learn about the famous author or take a trip to the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory and walk through the home of hundreds of butterflies and exotic birds.

Of course the most popular activities are water sports and just lounging at the beach. There are numerous opportunities around Key West to rent snorkeling gear, jet skis, canoes and kayaks. There are also plenty of tours that take you out into the surrounding ocean where you can snorkel amongst coral or go deep-sea diving. Taking a sunset cruise is the perfect way to end a day in paradise.

In order to soak up some rays, visit one of the many beaches that Key West has to offer. Smathers Beach is usually very busy but you will find everything there. From volleyball and sports games to small vendors and water sport concessions, it has it all. The peaceful beach at Fort Zachary Taylor is the ideal place for those who just want to relax. There is a small restaurant, facilities and plenty of white sand.

A trip to Key West isn’t complete without a stroll down the bustling Duval Street. It is the heart of the island and boasts some great shops, nightlife and restaurants. Here you will find locals and tourists out until the early hours of the morning enjoying drinks and good music, most likely at either Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville or Sloppy Joe’s. Afterwards, they stumble towards Blue Heaven or Pepe’s for a delicious breakfast to start their day right.

Be sure to book your flights to this island paradise in advance in order to get the best selection of cheap tickets and accommodation options.
