Cheap Flights to London for Wimbledon championships

The Wimbledon championships are one of the most popular tennis events on the annual tennis calendar. From June 25 through July 8, 2012, the 126th championship series will take place at the famous courts in England. The Wimbledon tournament is held during peak tourist season for London and the entirety of England and attracts spectators from around the world. Although it is a tennis event, the area of Wimbledon is home to a variety of attractions and sites that will keep spectators and visitors occupied during their time not at the courts. Situated just a 20 minute train or Tube (subway) ride away from Central London, Wimbledon could not be in a more perfect spot.

The Championships Wimbledon began in 1877 with the first Lawn Tennis Championship that was held on the lawns of the All England Club (now Wimbledon). The courts have seen many great matches over the years and the majority of tennis’ famous names have walked through the club. Although the Wimbledon championships have given the club its name and is still the major draw for visitors, the club is open year-round. Tourists can opt to visit Wimbledon throughout the year to visit the well-documented museum and take a tour of the courts. A visit can provide outsiders with a great deal of tennis knowledge and a more in-depth look at the trials and tribulations of the club over the past 126 years.

Since Wimbledon tennis is a world renowned event, tickets can be extremely hard to come by if visitors do not plan far in advance. The majority of the tickets are distributed through the Public Ballot which is available through the club’s website. In order to secure tickets this way, one must enter almost ten months prior to the event. Another option to try and get tickets is to wait in the line the day of the match you wish to attend. Although this isn’t guaranteed, some wishful spectators end up lucking out and getting tickets.

Cheap flights to London will be a difficult task to come by as there are numerous events happening in London around the same time. The 2012 Olympics are being hosted in London this year which will make airfares significantly more expensive than other times throughout the year. The best way to search for affordable airline tickets would be to do so far in advance to your departure date. These airfares will most likely be booked quickly so be sure to do diligent research in order to try and get the best deal.

When looking for your cheap tickets to London keep in mind that there are various airports servicing the London area. London Heathrow Airport is the largest in the area and services the most flights but because of its convenience, tickets can sometimes be pricey. London Gatwick Airport is another alternative that could offer more affordable flight options if you are traveling from overseas. If you are flying from within Europe, London Stansted and London Luton airports are both serviced by budget airlines. Although they are further from Central London, they usually offer bargain prices. Once you arrive in London, a short Tube or taxi ride away will take you to Wimbledon.
