The festival is supposed to have initiated as early as 1810 in the month of October. It was organized to commemorate the marriage of Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen and King Ludwig I who was a crown prince at that time. A spectacular horse race is also organized on the first day of the festival.
Special beer is brewed during this occasion which is slightly dark in color and stronger than the others. The taste is bitter, and the amount of alcohol is slightly higher. This traditional beer is served in a tankard having one liter capacity. This beer is first served to the Minister-President of Bavaria.
