Ways to tackle Washington DC

All set for your vacation to Washington DC? Before you board your flight to DC, here’s a quick rundown on what you’ll find and what you can expect in the capital city.

When to Visit
The United States capital comes to life in the spring and fall, and is also a great time to find cheap flights to the city. Summers are great as well, but do tend to get pretty hot and humid, as well as crowded. The winter months can at times be bearable, but because of the cold and snow, you may find yourself preferring to stay indoors.

The Confusing City Streets
Washington DC was deliberately constructed to confuse all rivals and foes, but it can also confuse its many friendly visitors! The best way to get around is to understand that it is divided into four quadrants and its streets are either lettered or numbered. The numbered streets run from north end to the south end and the lettered ones from east to west. If you are considering driving, don’t worry if you get confused, but be prepared as the capital traffic can get pretty heavy at times.

Metro Manners

A majority of the population takes the metro in Washington DC. With everyone is on the move rushing to attend one important meeting after the other, make sure you follow basic metro rules. Do not litter the metro train or the station, while on an escalator the left side is for walkers and right for those who wish to stand. And don’t forget, it’s the Metro, not the subway!

Tickle Your Taste Buds
Washington DC is loved for being a blend of various cultures and ethnicities – and you’ll find the sheer diversity in the food that you get to sample. Indulge your taste buds on a multiplicity of delicacies and tastes ranging from Indian, Belgian, Mexican and Ethiopian. Some great restaurants to visit are Rasika, Brasserie Beck, Oyamel and Dino.

Tours, Reservations and Money
One of the best things about Washington DC is that you can make the most of your vacation here without really having to shell out much. Most of the city attractions, including museums, are free to all! But for important sites like the US Capitol and Washington Monument, you have to book well in advance as most of the tickets are given away on first-come first-served basis.

What to Pack

Washington DC is a city of marked contrasts. You can expect to find anything here – from formal business suits to men roaming about in casual tees and jeans. Just remember to pack accordingly for the weather/month you have booked your cheap flight tickets for, as well as the activities you have planned.
