Jet Airways seeks to expand international services by December 2012

India’s largest private carrier Jet Airways has made known its intentions that it wants to serve more international destinations by the winter of 2012. The airline has applied to the civil aviation ministry and seeking its approval to begin overseas flights. Currently, the national flag carrier Air India flies to more overseas destinations than any other Indian airlines.

The Indian civil aviation ministry has ended Air India’s monopoly over bilateral traffic rights, and is now allowing all Indian carriers to utilize these newly-created opportunities.

If the government approves the request by India’s leading private airline, then Jet Airways flights will start serving more international routes.
Jet Airways is seeking government permission to expand its international services to 518 flights per week from the existing 370 by December 2012. This will also make the airline’s international operations increase by 40 percent.

The airline wants to add 35 new flights to Germany and 7 each to France and Belgium. It also wants to add 7 new flights each to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sharjah and Vietnam.

The government has already permitted Jet Airways to add 74 new flights per week from the current summer schedule beginning April 1 to destinations, such as Dar es Salaam (Africa), Kuwait, Bangladesh, Dubai, Maldives, Singapore, Bangkok and Sri Lanka.
