LATAM Airlines to upgrade fleet, invest $7,870 million

The newly-formed LATAM Airlines Group recently announced it will be investing $7,870 million to upgrade its fleet.

The new company came into existence recently and would be operating LAN Airlines flights as well as those of Brazilian carrier TAM Airlines. After the merger, the flights of both the carriers would now be operated under the new brand of LATAM Airlines.

The company announced that the money is being invested in a big way to expand and improve its fleet between now and 2014. The move is aimed at strengthening the operations of the airline.

The newly-merged company currently has a total strength of 319 aircrafts in its fleet, but wants to raise the total to 359 aircrafts.

Top officials of LATAM Airlines said that they are hoping to recover their investment grade credit rating in less than a year. The rating was stripped from LAN Airlines after it announced its merger with TAM because of the debt it owed to the Brazilian company.
