Aer Lingus flights operations in Belfast to be shut if Ryanair takes over

Leading European budget carrier Ryanair recently announced it will shut down Aer Lingus flights operation in Belfast if it finally succeeds in the takeover of its rival Dublin-based carrier.

Ryanair has indicated that if its takeover bid becomes successful then it would be moving Aer Lingus’ main European base to Brussels. It will also shut Aer Lingus flights operations at Belfast and London Gatwick after takeover.

Some aviation experts have already predicted that Ryanair’s acquisition bid of Aer Lingus is likely to materialize next year.

Aer Lingus is currently in the process of transferring to the George Best City Airport from Belfast International later this month. If Ryanair succeeds in the carrier’s takeover, then its intention to shut its Belfast operations will appear to be a big blow for Aer Lingus.

Ryanair’s takeover bid of Aer Lingus is being currently reviewed by the European competition commissioner. After the takeover, Ryanair is expected to maintain the Aer Lingus brand.
