Tenement Museum – Preserving immigrants’ history in New York City

New York City is essentially a city of immigrants, who played and still continue to play a significant role in shaping and evolving the national identity of America. The Tenement Museum in New York City is a great tribute to the immigrants as such. To know this great city and its rich history, book cheap flights to New York City now and visit this amazing destination.

The Tenement Museum was founded by Ruth Abram, a social activist and historian, who wanted to pay tribute and honor America’s immigrants. The tenements in New York City were perceived as the perfect place to build the museum. These tenements were the first American homes for the large numbers of immigrants in the city. The Tenement Museum therefore came into existence for interpreting and preserving the history of immigrants who built their lives and finally settled on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The museum also plays an important role in forging emotional bonds between the scores of tourists and immigrants’ past and present.

This unique Tenement Museum is situated in an old tenement apartment building at 97 Orchard Street. Here nearly 7,000 immigrants resided. A tour of the apartments aptly recreates the immigrant life as it existed in the 19th and 20th century. The personal stories of the challenges faced by the working class have been aptly depicted at this history museum. The museum also conducts seven guided tours. You can choose from one of these tours to explore a specific immigrant experience and they fared on with their lives.  A visit to the Tenement Museum is a must to relive the immigrants’ history in New York City.
