Icelandair to launch flights on Birmingham-Reykjavik route

Icelandair has announced its plan to introduce new flights between Birmingham and Reykjavik in 2015. The flight between the two destinations is expected to be launched from February next year.

Media reports said that Icelandair will be adding twice weekly flights from the Midlands. The airline has already enhanced its capacity on existing routes with the addition of new frequencies this year.

Icelandair has indicated that it will be expanding its capacity with the addition of a 5th weekly flight in April 2015. The airline has also hinted that it will begin a 6th weekly flight from London Gatwick from October next year.

Hjalti Jonsson, Icelandair’s Marketing and Communications Manager UK, said that this year proved to be a great start for the airline with more and more British tourists taking flights to Reykjavik to see the unique natural phenomenon “Northern Lights”.

He said that Birmingham is an evolving market and presently the best for traffic generation considering the tremendous spurt in tourism to Iceland in recent years.

Jonsson further said that the additional traffic from the UK would provide increased opportunities for Icelandair’s long-haul routes into the U.S. He said that nearly half of the passengers traveling from the UK connect via Reykjavik to onwards destinations in Canada and the United States. He said that with increased traffic from UK, the airline has for the first time this year started operating flights to Washington D.C. and Toronto year-round. The airline has also introduced new flights to Vancouver and Edmonton this year.
