Icelandair to purchase 12 Boeing 737 MAX narrow-body aircrafts

Iceland’s national flag carrier recently announced it has decided to purchase 12 Boeing 737 MAX Boeing aircrafts. The airline has already finalized the deal with the world’s largest aircraft maker, which is worth more than $1.2 billion. The Reykjavik-based carrier said that the narrow-body commercial aircrafts are fuel efficient.

The airline in a statement said that by purchasing the aircrafts it wants to expand its service by operating Icelandair flights to more European and North American destinations.

Bjorgolfur Johannsson, Icelandair Group president and CEO, said that the Boeing Co. has assured that it will do whatever it can to help the airline further strengthen and grow its fleet and network towards the future.

Johannsson said that the Boeing 737 MAX aircrafts being acquired would be entering into service in the year 2017. The aircrafts would help the flights see a 13 percent fuel-use improvement. Currently, Icelandair Group operates a fleet of 23 Boeing 757 aircrafts.
