Sun Country at No. 10 in fuel efficiency among U.S. carriers

Sun Country Airlines has been ranked at No. 10 for fuel efficiency among U.S. carriers. This was indicated in a recent study by a team of researchers of 15 airlines in the United States. The researchers have come up with a formula in which they crunched the numbers and figured out the relative fuel efficiency in these aircrafts. The results are based on 2010 numbers.

The fuel efficiency score of Sun Country Airlines, which was placed at No. 10, was 0.97, and its excess fuel per unit transport service was at above 14 percent. Established in 1982, Sun Country Airlines operates out of its main hub in Minnesota. The airline has been recognized for providing the top notch service to its customers. Sun Country Airlines has been ranked in the Top Ten Domestic Airlines lists by both Travel+Leisure for five years in a row and Condé Nast Travelers three years in a row.

According to the study, the top three most fuel efficient carriers in the United States are Alaska Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. However, the worst performers in terms of fuel efficiency are Allegiant Air, American Airlines and Air Tran Airways.

The rankings are based on the methodology prepared by the researchers and finally approved by a non-profit group, the International Council on Clean Technology (ICCT). The ICCT analysis evaluated the fuel efficiency of an airline relative to both the mobility (straight-line passenger miles between origin and destination) and access (airports served and/or flight frequency) it provides.
