Hawaiian Airlines continue with its global expansion spree

Hawaiian Airlines has performed remarkably well in the past years and putting up with its global expansion plan. Mark Dunkerley, CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, said that the airline has succeeded in launching three international routes in 2013, and would continue to launch new routes this year as well.

Dunkerley said that Hawaiian Airlines has since November 2010 launched flights to nine international destinations. This year the airline has started offering plane tickets for travel to Beijing as the new service from Honolulu starts from April 16. Beijing will now be the airline’s 10th new international destination.

The launch of a new route costs the airline nearly $100 million. But Dunkerley said that despite such a huge cost he would not be deterred from launching the new route at least for a short term on an experimental basis. The nonstop flights to Beijing would be operated thrice weekly.

The launch of Honolulu-Beijing flight comes amid a recent announcement that Hawaiian Airlines would stop serving Taipei from April 7 after 9 months of operations. The airline will also stop flying to Fukuoka from June 30 after serving the Japanese city for two years. Earlier, the airline discontinued flights to Manila from August 1, 2013 after operating on the route for five years.

The way in which Hawaiian Airlines is dropping new routes and adding new ones within a short period of operations might prove to be quite costly to run a business, but airline industry experts argue that this kind of experimentation is just right and Hawaiian Airlines is doing the perfect thing. This solid planning might prove to be quite beneficial for the airline in the long term.
