Lufthansa upgrades travel options with new Premium Economy class

Flying business class is undoubtedly an enjoyable experience. But here’s an opportunity for all those traveling in economy class so far to upgrade their status and start flying in a new travel class – Premium Economy – being launched by Lufthansa.

Germany’s flagship carrier Lufthansa recently announced that it has successfully installed premium economy class on half of its long-haul fleet. The airline said that 53 of its aircrafts will now boast of 2,000 new premium economy seats.

A spokesperson of the airline said that all the Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A380 aircrafts in its fleet have been retrofitted with premium economy. Other aircrafts such as Boeing 747-400s, Airbus A340-600s, Airbus A340-300s and Airbus A330-300s will also be retrofitted with the new product in the coming weeks. The airline will be installing the new premium economy across all of its 105 long-haul aircrafts in its fleet by late October this year.

Lufthansa said that some of its aircrafts that have already been fitted with premium economy cabins are serving destinations such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Sao Paulo, Hong Kong, Singapore and Beijing.

According to the airline, the new premium economy seats are situated in a separate compartment between economy class and business class. Each premium economy cabin will have between 21 and 52 seats, which will however depend on the aircraft type. The seat pitch will be of 38 inches and the width will be either 18 or 19 inches.

The airline has introduced the premium economy class on its flights to San Francisco, Newark, Los Angeles, Sao Paolo, Beijing and Mexico City from Munich on its Airbus A340-600 fleet effective from May 12, 2015. Lufthansa has further indicated that it will start offering premium economy on flights to Boston and Chicago from Frankfurt on Airbus A380 aircraft starting from June 15, 2015.

Lufthansa said that the new premium economy class is primarily targeted at cost-conscious leisure and business travelers who are looking for more legroom, great comfort, privacy, and enhanced services. With its new product the airline is aiming to further strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive international market.
