Santo Domingo is the oldest city in the Dominican Republic and is home to a variety of historical attractions. Many travelers overlook the unique history of this Caribbean island. A trip to Santo Domingo will provide visitors with a glimpse into the past. In addition to the historical sites, the city is home to the largest shopping area on the island as well as a wide array of restaurants serving up delicious local cuisine. Since the Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean, the island experiences beautiful weather year round like the rest of its neighbors. Two of the most popular historical attractions located in Santo Domingo are the Colonial City and the Alcazar de Colon. The Colonial City is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is located at the first settlement of the Dominican Republic. It was home to the governor of the city during the 1500s and includes some magnificent buildings such as the cathedral, the Ozama Fortress and the Tower of Homage. The Alcazar was built for Christopher Columbus’s son and is a beautiful mansion that is one of the oldest Viceregal residences in the world.

In addition to the historical sites, visitors taking advantage of cheap tickets to Santo Domingo will want to explore some natural wonders as well. Los Tres Ojos is a massive cave that is surrounded by three pristine lagoons. It is located in the Los Tres Ojos National Park and visitors are able to take a small boat ride through the caves. This peaceful area is ideal for a day trip from the hectic downtown area of the city. The Botanical Gardens here are also marvelous and provide travelers with a sense of peace and seclusion. The largest on the island, the gardens feature flowers and plants that are native to the island. The Mirador del Norte Park is also an excellent outdoor space to take advantage of.
