Spirit Airlines flights to Florida spur Unity airport expansion

The expansion of Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, also called Unity Airport, is being actively considered with the terminal space filled and passenger traffic likely to soar to 200,000 in 2012.

Gabe Monzo, Executive Director of Westmoreland County Airport Authority, said that the immediate need for the expansion of the airport has been spurred with the number of Spirit Airlines flights to Florida and South Carolina.

Preliminary designs for a terminal expansion project estimated to cost between $1 million and $3 million is already into place and the airport officials are ready to begin the work within one to three years.

Spirit flight reservations to Orlando will also be available to passengers as the airline begins its flights in May. The airport authorities have already indicated that this will further tighten the situation and increase pressure on the already-crowded Unity Airport.
