Spirit Airlines announces preliminary traffic results for May 2012

Spirit Airlines flights put up a strong showing in May this year. The airline recently announced its preliminary traffic results for May 2012 and sounded quite upbeat at the outcome.

The airline reported that its traffic (revenue passenger miles) in the month of May this year increased 11.4 percent as compared to the same month in 2011, on a capacity (available seat miles) increase of 13.7 percent. The load factor for the month was 84.3 percent.

Ben Baldanza, President and Chief Executive Officer of Spirit Airlines, said that the May 2012 load factor was down 1.7 points y-o-y as a stronger pricing environment drove higher total yields. He said that the demand and pricing environment continues to remain favorable and the strength being seen in forward booking seems to be pleasing.

The airline stated that it is currently expecting the capacity to be up 17.0 percent y-o-y for the second quarter of 2012, up 23.7 percent y-o-y in the third quarter of 2012, and up 22.3 percent y-o-y for the full year 2012.

With its all-Airbus fleet, Spirit Airlines is operating more than 190 daily flights to over 50 destinations within the U.S., Latin America and Caribbean.
