Spirit Airlines launches awareness campaign to sensitize consumers of USDOT's new fares rule

Spirit Airlines recently launched awareness campaign to sensitize consumers about the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) latest fare rules to become effective this week. The new rules mandate that Spirit Airlines along with other airlines should compulsorily hide the government’s taxes and fees in fares.

Spirit Airlines and other US carriers have been vehemently opposing USDOT’s new regulations calling for more transparency from the government’s side.

Ben Baldanza, President and CEO of Spirit Airlines, said that the better form of transparency is to break out costs and let the customers know exactly what they are buying. He said that the airline believes that customers need to know how much of their fare goes toward government taxes and fees instead of hiding it in the fare.

Spirit Airlines claimed that it is aware that some policymakers are mulling increasing the Federal Excise Tax on air travelers and airlines and doubling several other governmental fees. The airline said that this is going to additionally burden the air travelers as well as the airlines.

Spirit Airlines currently offers more than 175 daily flights to over 45 destinations throughout the US, Latin America and Caribbean.
