Spirit Airlines resume flights to Chicago and Detroit from Atlantic City

Spirit Airlines recently announced it is resuming its daily flights services to Chicago and Detroit from Atlantic City International Airport in May this year.

The airline in a statement said that Spirit Airlines flights to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport started in March 2011. The service was however discontinued last September, but the airline decided that the service will again become seasonal. The airline had added seasonal daily service to Detroit in 2010.

Spirit Airlines, which started its daily service to Boston in the beginning of March this year, said that a seasonal service to Atlanta as well as a second daily flight to Boston is being launched on May 17, 2012.

Bart Mueller, Executive Director of the South Jersey Transportation Authority, which operates the Atlantic City International Airport, said that resuming seasonal service to the two key markets – Chicago and Detroit – makes a perfect sense as the interest of travelers in low-cost alternatives for the spring and summer travel season is beginning to peak.

Currently, the Atlantic City International Airport is in the midst of expansion, which is scheduled to be completed by June this year. The number of gates at the airport will be increased from 7 to 10 as a result of this expansion. A federal inspection station for international flights will also be added.
