Thailand is a wonderful destination for a relaxing getaway. From the sun drenched beaches to the smiling faces of the locals, you'll feel welcome and at ease from the moment your plane touches down on the tarmac. No matter how stressed out you feel from the hustle and bustle of daily life, a week in Thailand will help you feel recharged and ready to take on the world. And while you can find tranquility in many parts of the country, there's really no place better than the island of Phuket. Located off the south western coast of the mainland, Phuket is home to amazing resorts, quaint little towns and an all-permeating aura of relaxation.

Head to the beach early
While there's something to be said for sleeping in late, you can score some prime beach time if you head to the shore early. Especially if you're staying near Patong Beach or near other more urban environment, there will be competition for a spot on the sand. For something a little more secluded - albeit with fewer nearby eateries - try staying near Kamala Beach or Surin Beach. But if you simply can't resist the allure of a comfy hotel bed, consider holding off on a beach visit until after 2pm - the hottest part of the day will be over, and you'll be able to score a beach mat and umbrella. Remember to tip the wandering vendors and you'll be treated like royalty all evening.

Try the local cuisine
Thai food is absolutely delicious, and while you've probably tried some at a restaurant in your home town, nothing compares to the real deal. Be sure to taste some authentic pad thai and spring rolls, but don't hesitate to go for some dishes you might not be familiar with. Nomadic Matt, a travel blogger, suggested ordering some pad see ew, a noodle and chicken dish with bok choy and soy sauce. And since you're on an island, you can't go wrong by sampling some local seafood. Many restaurants on Phuket serve delicious oysters in garlic sauce.

Get a massage
There's no better way to relax than with a thai massage. You can even get one right on the beach! For the equivalent of about $20, you can get a back massage that will work out all of the cramps and soreness that come from sitting at a desk all day long. And if you're feet hurt, a pressure point massage will relieve the tension while some pumice will leave your skin glowing and soft. Many resorts on Phuket offer complete spa packages, so you can pamper yourself without going over budget.

Go for a boat ride
Phuket Magazine recommended taking a day trip out to the Phi Phi Islands to see some truly magnificent sights. You can hire a boat to take you around the islands where you can relax on a secluded beach, go snorkeling in the crystal clear waters or observe the local monkey colony. You'll find ample opportunities for taking photos that will impress your friends back home.
