Malaysia Airlines and Myanmar Airways International renewed their
codeshare ties. The new agreement will be effective February 15, 2014.
Passengers who wish to use the services of both these airlines will be
able to book tickets beginning February 10, 2014.
This agreement is good news for all those who wish to benefit from the
airlines’ extensive network will be able to do so very soon. With these
flights, access to Yangon would increase manifolds. At present, 14
flights operate service to the capital city. These flights will increase
to 19 in the coming times. As soon as the codeshare agreement is
implemented, Myanmar Airways will display the flight code of Malaysia
Airlines on Kuala Lumpur-Yangon-Kuala Lumpur route. This agreement will
enable Myanmar Airways to use the Malaysian carrier’s services to
Singapore, Langkawi, Bangkok, and Penang. As per the agreement, Malaysia
Airlines too will carry the flight code of Myanmar Airways. The two
airlines had collaborated earlier in the year 2006 through a codeshare
agreement. However, this agreement was terminated in 2010 due to
sanctions against Myanmar.
Malaysia Airlines operates as the flagship carrier of Malaysia. It

destinations worldwide. It operates out of its hubs in Kuala Lumpur
International Airport and Kota Kinabalu International Airport. On the
other hand, Myanmar Airways operates as the flagship carrier of Myanmar
and flies to about 12 destinations overall. Its hub is in Yangon
International Airport.
