Where you start the new year could have a big impact on how the next twelve months go for you. Will you start the new year at home in your pajamas, or will you be somewhere a little more exciting? Whether you want to party with friends or find somewhere completely new, the options are nearly endless. Before you start working on those new year's resolutions to exercise more and eat fewer sweets, spend the last night of 2016 enjoying some of life's chief joys.

To narrow down your list of New Year's Eve plans, check out the list of awesome destinations below:

New York City
When you think of New Year's Eve, there's a good chance that you' picture the ball dropping in Times Square. This tradition is over 100 years old and has come a long way since the original ball was lowered in 1907. That ball was a mere five feet in diameter, while the modern ball, weighing over 12 tons, is 12 feet in diameter and contains over 32,000 LED lights. You can watch this ball drop from Times Square at exactly midnight - though you'll want to arrive quite early to get the best view.

If you'd rather stay out of the cold, consider heading to one of the many exclusive parties around the city. Gaining entrance to these parties can be tricky, but the tradition is so popular that many restaurants are opting to stay open late to help patrons celebrate in style.

Los Angeles
New Year's in Los Angeles is little warmer than it is in NYC. If you want to watch the last sunset of the year, there's no better place to do so than from one of the nearby beaches. Consider heading to the famous Santa Monica Pier for a beautiful view of the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean. There's no shortage of late night parties in the City of Angels, either. The Queen Mary will be hosting a party featuring multiple musical acts, magic shows and movie-themed rooms.

The best views of the fireworks will be from the various high-flying restaurants in the financial district. Be sure to make your reservations well in advance because many restaurants will be offering three-course meals for upwards of $250. The prices may be higher than usual, but seats are expected to fill up quickly.

Chicago
Chi-town is another great destination in which to ring in the new year. In Chicago, you'll be surrounded by late-night revelers and all the excitement you can handle. It may be a little cold in the Windy City, so be sure to wrap up tight before heading out to your celebrations. Though if you're heading to a late night party, things will probably heat up as midnight draws nearer.

Time Out Magazine reported that there will be dozens of music shows across the city featuring acts such as Har Mar Superstar, Diane Coffee and Lalah Hathaway. Dance the night away with your special someone and greet the new year on an emotional high.

Washington D.C.
This year, consider watching the fireworks from the country's capital city. In Washington D.C. you'll find that never party has to be a political one. Join your fellow countrymen in ringing in the new year with drinks, delicious food and lots of fun. Whether you're in downtown or Georgetown, you'll find an event that matches your mood.

From masquerades to 90's night parties, there's a wide array of events in D.C. this year. Head out early and stay up late with your friends to welcome in 2017. On New Year's Day, have a delicious brunch in one of the city's great eateries. Sip on a mimosa and indulge in some warm pancakes and waffles before settling down to write your list of new year's resolutions.

When you have access to cheap airline tickets, you can celebrate the new year anywhere you please. Remember to stay safe and find a ride back to your hotel after leaving the party. Have an awesome New Year's Eve!
